Google Scholar: Advanced Searching
There is also an advanced searching option. It's well hidden though. You can find it by clicking on the three stacked lines (sometimes referred to as the hamburger button or menu) on the top left of the page
We'll look at some of the other options on the personalisation page.
Clicking on Advanced Search opens a box
Advanced search is more powerful and lets you fine tune your searches. The options are:
- With all of the words - all the words that you enter (Boolean Search "And")
- With the exact phrase - search for a phrase
- With at least one of the words - search for articles containing one of the words you enter (Boolean Search OR)
- Without the words - search for articles that don't contain the words that you enter (Boolean Search NOT)
- Whether the words occur in the full text of the article or the title
- Return articles written by - a specific author
- Return articles published in - a specific journal
- Return articles published between - same as the Custom date range in the ordinary search
Here's an example
This is telling Scholar to look for articles that:
- include both "sleep" and "deprivation" anywhere in the article
- include the exact phrase "I am tired" anywhere in the article
- include either "coffee" or "break" anywhere in the article
- don't include "tea"
- were published between 1990-1995
Using advanced search is a good way of reducing search results to manageable levels
