The mouse rests on the mouse pad (or desk) next to the keyboard with the cord pointing away from you toward the back of the desk.
Right-handed people usually position the mouse on the right side of the keyboard. Lefties sometimes keep this position, but may be more comfortable moving the mouse to the left side of the keyboard so that they may easily use their dominant hand for mouse operation.
