There's a lot more that you can do with browsers than simply type URLs or click links. The following examples all use Google Chrome, but other browsers will look and act similarly.
Remember the address bar? To the left of the URL are three icons:
Takes you back to the last webpage you visited
Takes you to the next webpage you visited (only works if you have used the back arrow, above)
Refreshes (reloads) the page that you are on
Refresh the page if it doesn't load properly or you think the content on the page might have changed.
Just as you use bookmarks to keep your place in a book, you can bookmark a page so that you can easily return to it another time without having to remember and type the URL or go looking for it.
To bookmark a page, click the star icon on the right-hand side of the address bar
This saves the URL to a file on your computer, which is accessible through Chrome (or whatever browser you are using)
To the right of the address bar are three little dots Clicking on these three dots brings up a menu with some options for customising and controlling Google Chrome.
We don't need to describe them all, but there are a few worth mentioning.
If you are using a mouse, right-clicking on a link will bring up another menu:
If you are using a mouse, right-clicking anywhere on a page will bring up another menu
Again, we don't have to go through every option, but let's mention a few of them:
When you're online, the browser keeps track of the pages that you visit and are stored in your browser history file. Amongst other things, when you browse in incognito mode, Chrome won't save your browsing history. People using the same device won't see the pages that you have visited (but whoever is in charge of your device's access to the Internet (your employer, college or Internet service provider) can still see what you are doing online).
Many browsers have extensions and add-on available. A browser extension/add-on is a small app that extends or adds to the things that browsers can do. You can use them to change the look of your browser, block adverts, manage your passwords, proofread your typing and much, much more.
